Pathankot Attack Row:50% visa applications of Pakistanis Rejected

A sharp decline has been registered in grant of visas to Pakistani nationals that may further result in souring of ties between India and Pakistan. More than 50% of visa applications have been rejected by the union home ministry from January to May this year, said officials.

The issue was also raised by Indian high commissioner to Pakistan, Gautam Bambawale during his recent meeting with union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi at New Delhi. According to the government data, 335,021 nationals from Pakistan applied for visa from January 1 to May 31 this year out of which 17,481 were given visas while 17,540 cases were rejected.

In 2015, only 8,800 cases were rejected while more than 31,000 visas were granted out of 39,800 applications received at the Indian high commission at Islamabad from January 1 to May 31, 2015. The number of Pak national who were given visas in 2014 were more than 39,000 out of 47,000 application in 2014 from January to May, said officials, adding that the drastic reduction in grant of visa may have been because of stringent security measures adopted by the agencies. News By ET News.
